Globe-Trotting Group Winner Jet Away Joins Irish Stallion Ranks

Globe-trotting Group winner JET AWAY is joining Ireland’s stallion ranks in 2015 at Arctic Tack Stud. He will stand as a dual-purpose sire, alongside Tack’s other four stallions Aizavoski (IRE), Arcadio, Le Fou (IRE) and Caudillo. He started his career under the training of the legendary Sir Henry Cecil, who trained him to win the Listed Festival Stakes at Goodwood, beating subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente (IRE) by 2 ¾ lengths in the process. JET AWAY himself made the move to Australia when owner Khalid Abdullah sold him to the MCR Bloodstock Syndicate to be trained by David Hayes.

He won his first two starts in Oz, including the Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield, followed by defeats by close margins in Group 1 contests- beaten  just two lengths in the Turnbull Stakes and 1 ¾ lengths in the Caulfield Cup. His career ended prematurely due to injury, yet trainer Hayes says of his former charge; “Jet Away showed the most determination of any racehorse I have ever trained- if he hadn’t picked up an injury he would have, in my opinion, gone on to win multiple Group 1 races in Australia.”

It is certainly high praise from a trainer of 30 Group 1 winners, however Jet Away was bred to be special, hailing from one of Juddmonte’s most esteemed families. He is out of Kalima, a sister to legendary broodmare Hasili (IRE), who produced stallions Dansili, Cacique (IRE) and Champs Elysees, themselves sires of 20 Group 1 winners together. His sire, Cape Cross (IRE), may have fewer sons standing at stud, yet it is quality rather than quantity when you look at his other son Sea The Stars (IRE), who has produced three Group 1 winners so far.

Arctic Tack Stud’s owner Eoin Banville is excited about his new recruit, commenting “He’s a beautiful specimen, a good-limbed horse and retired sound in wind. We’re excited about him.” The stud will open it’s doors as part of ITM’s Irish Stallion Trail, which runs from January 22nd-25th next week. This event includes racing at Gowran Park on the Thursday, in which Tack sponsor a race to celebrate the launch of their new stallion.
